2014 Records

Below are 2014 records. First sightings are given in bold.
January
Jesmond and Alexander Harding (11/01/2014)
One Small Tortoiseshell seen at 2:10 pm on the west facing limestone gable wall of Carton House, County Kildare. The butterfly, first seen in flight, settled high up on the wall to bask with wings held flat against the stonework. It may have been sleeping in one of the many crevices in the masonry and roused by the bright sunshine which brought warmth to the wall. Nearby hanging baskets contained flowers so it may have access to nectar. Our first free-flying butterfly sighting of 2014 and hopefully a portent of a good season. Sunny, calm, temperature 6°C.

Richella Duggan (12/04/2014)
Two Brimstones at St John’s Wood – Rinnagan, Rindoon Penninsula, (Lough Ree), Co. Roscommon. Grid Reference for Car Park – M997 558

This ancient semi-natural woodland is really well managed. Coppicing has opened up large areas – there is a wide variety of woodland wild flowers including Early Purple Orchids, Bluebells, Wood Sorrel, Wild Garlic, Wild Strawberry and Common Dog Violet. There is also an area of Fen at one edge of the woodland.

Conditions – 11am approx. Overcast and drizzly. When the rain stopped we spotted one Brimstone basking on mossy verge at the edge of the pathway.

Spotted a Brimstone along green driveway beside the car park area.

Note: St John’s Wood is an area of dense woodland on the shore of Lough Ree. Until recently it had little lepidoptera interest because of its dense growth which produced a dark woodland floor with little or no herb layer. Before the management described above by Richella the only place where butterflies could be found was the edges of the wood.

Richella Duggan (12/04/2014)

A really well maintained walk with spectacular views in all directions.
