During a one and a half hour split transect through the alder marsh
area of the North Bull, we counted 453 Marsh Fritillaries. Most were male and in pristine condition. They were widely spread over the area feeding on buttercup, Common Bird’s-foot-trefoil, Red Clover, Cuckoo Flower and orchids. Numbers counted are representative but only a part of the number present.

This is a summary of the butterflies seen during the combined Donegal An Taisce Butterfly and Orchid walk and the annual Donegal butterfly meeting held in the magnificent surroundings of south Donegal’s foremost Nature reserve at Sheskinmore. Wildflower meadows of Burrenesque quality merges into marsh, machair and degrading dunes. Dry but largely cloudy conditions with occasional brightness and about 20 degrees enabled some 65 participants to enjoy the carpets of wildflowers and numerous butterflies. Many hundreds of Burnet moths and unhatched pupae, as well as large numbers of Cinnabar Moth caterpillars, were also seen.
